alison burns joins us from our washington, d.c. newsroom with the latest on the government's efforts to keep up with technology. good morning, alison. >> reporter: good morning to you, pam. that's right. the bottom line here is that communications technology is getting so sophisticated government spies are struggling to keep up. as more people communicate on line instead of by phone the feds say their ability to wiretap criminal and terrorism suspects is going dark. so the new york times reports today that the obama administration is going to ask congress to okay legislation that will make it easier for the government to eavesdrop on internet and e-mail communications like social networking sites and blackberries. it wants all on line services technically equipped to comply with a wiretap order. now internet privacy groups say the legislation would have huge implication but the feds are pointing to a he cent high profile terror attempt they say could have been stopped much sooner. i will have more on that during my next update in a

it wasn't just us. it was all over the place. today 90s, 100s for many. 70s, 8 0z and 90s by the coast. >>> traffic on 237 moving along well if you are on westbound 237 not a bad commute at all. the morning commute looks pretty good. if you are on northbound 101 approaching the 80 split that traffic also looks good. now back to the desk. >>> we are following developing news in oakland. that's where a 6-year-old girl was shot and injured this morning while sound asleep inside her home. police say someone opened fire at her family's home at the corner of east 16th and seminary avenue shortly after 2:00 a.m. family members tell us a bullet went through the girl's arm and into her chest. they gave us this picture of the little girl. she is being treated at children's hospital and is expected to survive. police say the home was targeted. they have no arrests but coming up at 6:00 ktvu is following the story and we'll have more on who family members say was the intended target and why. >>> time now 5:30. a stunning new development in t
